Mom’s outfit

As moms we’re used to putting our needs last — but not today! You’ve got to figure out what you’re going to wear before everyone else. Why? First off, you’re likely the pickiest and toughest to dress. Second, you need to feel beautiful. When you feel beautiful you’ll enjoy the experience more and that feeling will radiate through your whole family. So by focusing on you, you’re really doing your family a favor. Feel better?

Tips:

Wear a dress

You may not wear dresses day-to-day but keep your mind open about wearing one to the lavender farm. A flowy dress looks amazingly flattering it photos. It instantly adds drama and romance. Wearing a dress will make you want dance with your partner and spin in the wind with your kids.

Or, Choose something else that adds movement

There are options other than a dress that add great movement and elegance. Consider flowy pants, a kimono or scarf.

Accessorize

Hats are some my absolute favorite accessories. They’re fun, draw attention to your face and give you something to do with your hands. Hats also have a transformational quality, helping you channel a whimsical side of your personality. Are you in Provence or BC? Who knows, you’re rocking a carefree straw hat and look like a million bucks.

Necklaces and jewelry also beautiful finishing touches. I love how my subject here chose chunky gold hoops as a confident counterbalance to the sweetness of her dress.

Color coordination

You can’t visit a lavender farm in bloom without being dazzled by its purple haze. If you want to harmonize with the purple, you can’t go wrong with a neutral colors: Consider:

  • Creams and camel

  • Soft greys

  • Navy blue

  • Denim or chambray

If you really want to pop, choose colors on the opposite side of the color wheel from lavender:

  • Orange

  • Yellow

Steer clear from:

  • Neon

  • Black

  • Too much small pattern

Consider the location

As beautiful as the venue is, keep in mind you’re heading to a farm. The ground can be uneven so best to leave your high heels at home. Flat sandals or slides for women are a great option and men look wonderful in slides, loafers or boat shoes, in neutral colors or brown.

Also comfort related, lavender blooming season is in July, when it’s normally quite hot. So dress for the weather but come prepared with a cardigan or little jacket. It’s better to add layers to a summer outfit than overheat in a long sleeved shirt.

I hope these tips give you ideas for your lavender photos. If you have any questions, I’m always happy to help!
