Timing plays a role in successful family photoshoot

So what time should we meet? Picking a time for your photos doesn’t need to be complicated. Timing comes down to two things: when the light will be the prettiest, and when your kids will be at their best!

Finding beautiful light

Most photographers will suggest a time when the light is most flattering. For many, this will be golden hour (the hour before sunset) when the light is soft and has a golden effect on hair and skin. The catch is, during the summer, golden hour takes place around 8 p.m., not the greatest if you have little ones.

Times to avoid

Rather than getting hung up on golden hour, I generally advise clients to meet me as far as possible from noon. Why? At noon the sun is high in the sky, casting harsh shadows on skin and causing you to squint. Not a good look!

What’s right for you

So other than around noon, when are you and your kids at their best? I’m happy to meet you in the morning, afternoon or early evening. Since I love shooting in gardens, there’s usually plenty of foliage for me to filter the sun’s rays. I guarantee you will look your best and feel your best doing it!
