Why this Victoria, BC photographer loves photographing people

Portrait photography peels back layers

As a kid, there’s nothing I loved more than creeping around outside taking pictures of plants and animals. As a student reporter I was obsessed with interesting ways to capture photos to help tell a story. Now, as a family and portrait photographer, I realize people ARE the story.

People fascinate me: where you grew up, why you live here now, what you love, struggles you’ve faced. I want to hear your stories and your point of view. I feel like the more I talk to people the more I see how we’re all connected. I also learn so much.

Peeling back my client’s layers is fun and inspiring. Hania is one such client, who contacted me for grad photos from UVic. As we talked I learned she was from Iran and loved Japanese maples. While we discussed what to wear and where to find the best maples I also learned she was graduating with a Masters in Education Psychology.

Hania was keen to have photos to send to her parents. They couldn’t leave Iran let alone watch her convocation ceremony streaming online because of government restrictions.

As I photographed Hania it was impossible not to be inspired by her flare and fun. Despite obvious obstacles she must have faced, she had persevered. The grad had already landed a job assessing children for learning disabilities.

Working with someone like Hania reminds me that what I do is more than just take pretty pictures. As clients you trust me to capture some of the most important times of your lives. It’s up to me to get you to reveal as much as you like me see you. I can’t wait to get to hear your story!
