What to wear to family photos in Victoria, BC
Rock your family photoshoot with quick wardrobe tips
What do you recommend we wear? It’s the most common question I get. And one I don’t think I’ve answered very well (until now! :D). To explain, I believe the subject’s attitude is the most important. My skills are very important too. But what you choose to wear will never make or break the photo. I appreciate your desire to look you best though and what you wear can definitely enhance an image. So I’ve complied my top tips to help you feel like a rockstar for your next shoot!
Go to outfit — What’s the outfit that makes you feel good when you’re headed somewhere special? Mom, pick yours and have the family choose coordinating clothes. I will say, keep your mind open about wearing a dress. A flowy dress looks amazingly flattering it photos. It instantly adds drama, elegance. Plus, its just plain fun to sway and spin with your family.
The location — Is it a sun drenched field, a shady forest or a studio? Decide if you would like to harmonize with your environment or stand out in it. There’s not a wrong answer. It’s just personal preference.
Your home — What colors do you gravitate towards in your home? If you hope to make your photos into art, what would you like to see on your walls?
When in doubt — Choose solid colors. Stick with a neutral, pastel or jewel tone color palette. Texture (from wool, lace, corduroy, etc.) is great. Steer clear of too much pattern.
A common thread — Gone are the days when families needed to match. However, it can look nice to have some color cohesion. One way to do this is to pick a pattern you love and pull colors from it. For example, maybe dad has a plaid shirt with navy, baby blue and orange. Grab your baby blue sweater, your daughter can wear her pale orange sweater and your son his navy sweatshirt.
I hope these tips give you ideas for your next photoshoot. My clients often send photos of what they have in mind and I’m always happy to help! Once you’ve picked your outfits you can move forward confidently and knowing the most important thing you can wear: a smile!
